Business Owner: An "Excelent" Example

I wanted to share a part of my biblical concepts assignment this week. As a part of most of my classes, there are assignment like this to connect the biblical teaching in what ever area we are studying. So in my class “Business Law,” this week's example verses were given to connect with various business titles. Examples from scripture of managers, agents, entrepreneurs…you get the idea.

But for “Owner” the scriptural verse given was Colossians 4:1 “Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.”

Well, I baulked at that, and for a very good reason. We no longer have slavery in the Western world, and whether you are a business owner, manager, agent (Christian or not), to even think of equating your employees as “slaves” is wrong. That is occasional writings by the Apostle Paul and really, for examples, we can do SO much better.

So I offered this excellent example.

How about this! For a business owner use Proverbs 31:10-31 as the example.

This person who is described as a woman of strength (khayil = strength is the best fit) makes such a successful business all her employees are well fed (v.14) takes owner business capital to expand (v.16) profits are such that the company excels in charitable giving (v.20) and all the employees are paid well enough to have a comfortable life style (v.21) and her company is well diversified (v.24) and has great future goals (v. 25) And finally she is looked to for her wise advice in the business world (not to mention a great husband)…How’s that for a godly business owner!

Why look at scripture the same old way?
